Top questions about GIS programming and their answers

General, Industry
It's been quite a while now since I started interacting with GIS and specifically, GIS programming. This is a field where I have met friends, mentors, role models and other people doing amazing stuff for our world. As evident in the Geo-Interview series, professionals are changing the lives of many through sharing knowledge and empowering societies through exchange programs both at individual levels and at organization level. It is most likely that your organization, county government or even country is developing a GIS portal for use in different sectors that exist in the area or within the mandate. Information systems have come of age and automating information dissemination has been a focus by many groups over the years. The emergence of initiatives such as Open Data and Open Standard...

Laban Karanja: “GIS is already becoming a darling of the business world..”

Interviews
Hi! My name is Laban Karanja - currently working as a Solutions Engineer with Esri Eastern Africa. Sounds like a grand title but it basically means that my job is to craft ArcGIS - based solutions for people/organizations who need them. I wasn't always into GIS (actually most of the people I work with would tell you I'm more into the 'IS' part of it than I am the 'G') - I stumbled onto it when I applied for a job at the company I currently work for. I studied Telecommunication Engineering at JKUAT many moons ago but never managed to join that sector. GIS was a bit more welcoming and I'm glad that I ended up here. Hobbies? I'm all about sleep, watching and listening to audio interviews and reading articles about the music business.   You can find Laban on Twitter @sowanch  also

The GIS industry has really come into its own in the last few years and is continuing to experience phenomenal growth rates. A PR Newswire report in early 2016 had the global geographic information system market growing at a compound annual growing rate of 11% between 2015 and 2020, mainly due to increased urbanization and the development of smart infrastructure. Naturally, this is expected to raise demand for skilled GIS professionals to run these systems and consequently there will be many individuals gunning for these positions. One sure way for a GIS professional to stand out is possessing some programming skills. If you've been in the GIS world for any amount of time, you'll notice that the predominantly popular programming language is Python - a dynamic and strongly typed programming...
