Laban Karanja: “GIS is already becoming a darling of the business world..”

Interviews
Hi! My name is Laban Karanja - currently working as a Solutions Engineer with Esri Eastern Africa. Sounds like a grand title but it basically means that my job is to craft ArcGIS - based solutions for people/organizations who need them. I wasn't always into GIS (actually most of the people I work with would tell you I'm more into the 'IS' part of it than I am the 'G') - I stumbled onto it when I applied for a job at the company I currently work for. I studied Telecommunication Engineering at JKUAT many moons ago but never managed to join that sector. GIS was a bit more welcoming and I'm glad that I ended up here. Hobbies? I'm all about sleep, watching and listening to audio interviews and reading articles about the music business.   You can find Laban on Twitter @sowanch  also

This article was inspired by a recent discussion on a Whatsapp group Do you think traditional GIS desktop apps will become redundant given the rapid developments in SaaS, PaaS etc? What's your take? With the proliferation of Cloud computing, especially considering it offsets your organization infrastructure costs allowing you to invest in what matters, software service, we've seen numerous new technologies and concept emerge within geospatial technology Internet of things, Big Data, Machine Learning, Virtual Reality, 3D Mapping and BIM, Smart Cities concepts. So are these the future of Geospatial technology? Are we looking at something more? Is desktop application loosing ground to cloud based solutions? First, let agree on this; I believe desktop application will be replaced by cl...

Visualizing data in Python (An overview)

Applications, Data, GeoIT, Integrations, Opensource, Tutorial
Today, companies are producing huge amounts of data in terms of volumes in their offices and work places. This has led to large files in data stores or even more server space to store this data.Compared to traditional ways or days, where data was collected and then pre-processed, data nowadays is ready for use into different areas making work easier and faster. This has been made possible by algorithms running in some servers somewhere or offices like yours or mine e.g. Google Servers or Social Media sites like Facebook. Implementing these techniques of machine learning, enhancing insights and developing better knowledge base has led to the great technology era we are experiencing at the moment. As evident at Mastering Python data visualization , accurate and correct data leads to better inf...
